The need for "Eyes on the street"

I was 16 years old when this happened, after my tuition class I was walking home alone on the street when a man appeared on a cycle, he looked like a migrant labour. Seeing me alone he chased me and tried to touch hold me.And when I almost reach my home he was using abusive words. It's been years but I still regret for reacting. Now being an architect and an Urban planner I realised the need for eyes on the street as stated by Jane Jacob. After that incident my mother never allowed me to walk alone in that particular street. I am from Kerala and as a woman, my experience living in Kollam city was safe. Expect few instances of unwatched areas, streets and open spaces around schools and colleges where there are few eyes on the street and spending late night in railway station.
(I wish if there are more markers because there are more spaces of bad experience not only Kollam city alone. )
